Okay, should probably point out this is spoliertastic.
Still here?
It's an allegory of the prelude to the war in Iraq, and in particular a personal exploration of the confusion I felt when it came down to trying to decide who to believe with regards to the WMD issue. The game is set in a pseudo-Tudor monarchy with a welfare state, experiencing increased security measures after an act of foreign aggression, in which the lead character's mother has died. The game is loaded with references to speeches by George W. Bush and Tony Blair, as well as references to World War 2 and September 11th. Background information on the game world is provided via newspaper articles that are a parody of Fox News circa September 2001. There's a dash of right-wing fundamentalism in there too, in that the monarchy is defined by a self-righteous religious belief. This religious aspect is expanded upon by characters within the game having multiple interpretations of the same root religion, mirroring the fact that Christianity and Islam share many core beliefs, but tend to be defined by their differences instead.
I could go on, but it's a very long discussion. There's tons of references in the game to real world people, especially in names and quotes. A lot of the newspaper articles in particular include paraphrases of world political figures.
